Top Ideas for a Fun and Memorable Father’s Day (Part Two)

  |     |   Family, Outdoors, Things to Do

Earlier this month, we listed some of the top things to do with your dad to capture the past, present and make memories for your future. The blog was so popular that we decided to continue to offer some insight to expand your adventures with your dad long after your Father’s Day celebrations are over.

Take a Picnic to the Park

If your dad is the outdoorsy type, Austin has the backyard to make good times in the great outdoors a fun and memorable time for all.

There is not enough time in one month to visit all of Austin's beautiful parks. However, there are plenty of days ahead as you ease into the summer months to pack a picnic, pick some parks, and explore.

The city has more than 220 parks located throughout the region. Most of these parks have a paved pathway within the park which can be used for walking, jogging, rollerblading, and bicycling, or just hanging out in the shade.

Here are two of our favorites.

Pease Park – This outdoor oasis is always on our list – especially when the temperatures are a little steamy! The kids love the Spray Ground and Jungle Jim. We love the setting that makes one unplug, unwind, and savor the last days of summer under the shady trees.

Lady Bird Lake – ALWAYS a favorite for locals and visitors alike, Lady Bird Lake is a must-do for our family every summer. With more than 2.6 million visits a year, the 10-mile trail is Austin’s most recognized and popular recreational area. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, named for a former Austin mayor and his wife, is ideal for a long and lazy stroll with the kids by your side.

Visit a Brewery or Vineyard
Depending on Dad’s favorite way to sip the afternoon away, Austin’s backyard overflows with endless options. From our award-winning breweries to the most prestigious vineyards within our great state, there are more options than ever before to toast to your dad year-round.

Make Someone’s Life a Little Brighter

Volunteering always feels good and especially so when you can share your time with Dad and others who need it most. Throughout Austin, there are 25 Boys and Girls Clubs that always seek volunteers, all of whom are invaluable to their existence. And you do not need to be super talented to help a child have a better day. Volunteers are always needed to coach a sports game, cook a simple healthy meal, read a book, or guide the kids through a homework project. For more details, contact [email protected].

From our family to yours, we share this appropriate quote from an anonymous poet some time ago:

“A Father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light to take us there.”
