THINGS TO DO
From psychedelic-focused stand-up, to Austin's classic holiday past time, here's what's going down this week in the capital city.
Zilker Trail of Lights
A holiday pastime since the ’60s, the Trail of Lights is a stunning medley of light displays, offerings from local food vendors (hot chocolate is a must!), and family fun. Pro tip: Take in the Zilker tree atop the trail’s 90-foot-tall Ferris wheel.
Now in its 57th year of production, Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s rendition of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker returns to the Long Center. Whether you’re partial to the Sugar Plum Fairy, the charming Uncle Drosselmeyer, or the terrifying Rat King, don’t miss your chance to experience this timeless ballet’s brilliant costumes, impeccably vibrant sets, and impressive cast of more than 200 dancers.
German-Texan Christmas Market
Take in a little European charm at the annual German-Texan Christmas market, a pop-up village located in the middle of downtown. From authentic delicacies like stollen (spiced fruit bread) made by The New World Bakery and gluehwein (mulled wine) to a massive selection of unique gift options like handcrafted ornaments, this event is bound to put you in the holiday spirit.
Austin Music Video Festival
Now in its fifth year, this film festival brings the world’s boldest music videos to big screens across Austin. Beyond celebrating hundreds of international videos and world premieres, AMVFest celebrates industry heavy hitters like Beyoncé, The Flaming Lips, and Spike Jonze.
Head Talks with Shane Mauss
Join the stand-up comedian and podcaster as he blends science, comedy, and psychedelics at Spider House, alongside anthropologist Sophia Rokhlin. While Mauss will explore the history of psychedelic research and the complex worlds of DMT, Rokhlin will give the audience an inside look into plant communication and ayahuasca. Part learning, part laughing, one thing’s for sure: the evening will be one hell of a trip.
