Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders

OCTOBER 27, 2019 – JANUARY 12, 2020 | 1:00 PM

Description

From griffins and giants to demons and dragons, monsters have enthralled people throughout time. In medieval art and literature, these fanciful creatures give form to fears, curiosities, and fantasies of the unfamiliar and the unknown. Medieval Monsters, organized by the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, will present a lively array of monsters that appear in more than fifty illuminated manuscripts from the European Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Each of the three sections of the exhibition—Terrors, Aliens, and Wonders—will explore the ways monsters functioned as the embodiment of power, the representation of marginalized groups in society, or the inspiration of awe.

Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders is organized by the Morgan Library & Museum, New York.

The Blanton presentation is organized by Holly Borham, Assistant Curator, Prints & Drawings, Blanton Museum of Art

A 3-day weekend is always a great time to get outdoors and enjoy quality time with your friends and family. According to Accuweather.com, temperatures in Austin are predicted to reach 100° this Memorial Day Weekend! To cool off, we have five ideas for epic water adventures to enjoy in Austin this year.
  1. Jet Powered Standup Paddle Boarding and Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake with Rowing Dock!

Rowing Dock, a local Austin company, offers equipment rentals such as kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards (SUP) for Austinites to get out and on the lake.

A rental currently exclusive to Rowing Dock on Lady Bird lake is the SUPJet. Built like a standard standup paddleboard but with an added kick, pressing a button on the board activates an electric engine to bring you up to 5 mph across the water!

Tip: If you decide to rent a fishing kayak, make sure you bring your own pole and bait!

  1. Krause Springs Swimming Site

Krause Springs is one of the best spots to go swimming near Austin as the natural springs keep the pools full year-round regardless of drought.  You never have to worry about water levels like many other Austin swimming holes. The property is a sight to be seen with 32 springs, camping grounds, and even a butterfly garden.

Tip: Credit cards are not accepted, so make sure to bring cash to pay the admission fee ($8 per adult and $5 per child).

  1. Guadalupe River Tubing

Few water activities are more enjoyable than floating down a river. Whitewater Sports offers float trips and rentals along the Guadalupe River. With two custom tubing options currently available, the Horseshoe and the Fourth Crossing, there is certainly fun to be had!

With a free shuttle included, you can tube as many times as you like.

Pricing is $24 per person, which includes a high-quality tube, free shuttle, free parking and free life jacket.

Tip:  Review the pricing page before you go for potential discounts!

  1. Sculpture Falls Day Hike

Sculpture Falls is the perfect day adventure as there is a 1.5-mile hike to get to the beautiful creek and endless fun once you arrive. With gentle falls and wading pools, it is a great place to spend a few hours basking in the sun and splashing in the water with friends and family.

Tip: Bring your dog and a 6 pack! Sculpture Falls is pup friendly and drinking is permitted on the property.

  1. Snorkel on the San Marcos River

Want to spend time looking beneath the surface? Snorkel TX offers guided snorkel tours of the San Marcos River, home to all sorts of beautiful fish! The guides can even make a video of your underwater adventure as a keepsake.

Tip: Enter your email on their site for a discount!

Summer is here which means the temperatures are heating up and we’re looking for cool things to do ‘inside’ all around our concierge community apartments in Austin.  To keep you fit while having fun, we’ve dedicated our June blogs to cool things to do in Austin this summer.

This first blog is all about the booming sport of rock-climbing and how Austin is taking it by storm.   Here are some highlights about four of the spots that beginner rock climbers, to the most advance, recommend for cool indoor fun.

For more ideas, feel free to stop in our office at LeMontreaux for more ideas on where to keep cool during the heat of the summer in Austin.

Crux Climbing Center
121 Pickle Road, Suite 100
512-931-3911

This bouldering and top roping facility includes a wall where climbers can “top out” and ascend over the top of the structure; for the little ones, there’s a super climbing room that will wear your child out!  The facility is open to all ages yet those 12 an under require parental supervision.

Day passes range from $10 to $22 and there are monthly memberships as well.

Gregory Gym at the U of Texas
2101 Speedway
512-471-6370

Climbers will appreciate the central location of this climbing wall, which offers bouldering to non-students as well as University of Texas students.  It’s open to participants 15 years and older, yet those under 17 require parental supervision.

Non- students must purchase a guest pass for $12 and then an additional bouldering pass for $10.

Austin Rock Gym
8300 N Lamar Boulevard
512-416-9299

This family-owned gym offering bouldering and top roping and features a 24-foot climbing wall called the “Big Pig.”   The facility is open to all ages yet climbers under 14 need to be accompanied by an adult.

Day passes are $10, and memberships start at $50 a month.

Austin Bouldering Project
979 Springdale Road
512-645-4633

The biggest rock-climbing gym in the United States, this massive facility includes bouldering arenas for adults, advanced youth, youth, and toddlers.   Just like most rock climbing businesses, it is open to all ages yet here if you are 14 or younger a parent or adult guardian is required.

Just a few weeks ago we started to post some insight about some of the hottest new musical talent that is born and raised and rising in and around your apartment in Austin at leMontreaux.  There is a such an increase in talent that we’re continuing this blog to showcase who else is new on the music scene in your hometown.

Otis The Destroyer

Inasmuch as we would have preferred to offer a bio straight off their website, we thought this write-up from Austin Monthly offered a great recap.  “For veteran Austin musicians, one band usually leads to another. That was the case with Otis the Destroyer, a side project formed by singer/guitarist Taylor Wilkins in 2015 near the end of his tenure with his former band, the Couch.  The new project was originally called Belushi, which became the title of their first EP, a heavy fuzzed-out rock record with a lineup of veterans from his previous bands: Anthony Rucci on guitar, Clellan Hyatt on drums, plus Kyle Robarge and Andrew Dalton splitting duties on bass. The sound is fast, rowdy rock ‘n’ roll, but with a sly sense of humor.”

Paul Cauthen

According to Paul Cauthen’s website … “ Paul remembers sitting alone in an Austin house after a weekend-long bender. A life making music seemed to be slipping away. Wide awake with nothing to lose, he fell on his hands and knees right there, bowed his head, and threw down a divine gauntlet.  “I dared Him,” Cauthen says, recalling his desperate challenge to God. “I said, ‘Use me. I’ll be a rag doll. Just put me out there, let’s go. I dare you.’” Most people don't plead in the form of a dare. That blend of vulnerability and brash confidence is part of what makes Cauthen and his music––which often hinges on the same paradox––so compelling.

Bee Caves

Here’s an interesting overview of the Bee Caves as presented by Black Fret – which is a non-profit organization who’s mission is focused on enabling the creation and performance of new music by the exceptional musicians of our amazing city.”  Their take on the band now follows: “Austin’s Bee Caves exists in between the layers of American music, showing a range as impressive and diverse as to blur the lines that divide rock, electronica, psychedelic noise and timeless Americana. The manic, honest urgency in Reed Calhoun’s lyrics is a central force guiding the music. Co-Producer and guitarist Sam Kearney is responsible for making the music expansive yet grounded in a disciplined use of mixed genres, textures, and sounds.”

White Label Analog

As the adage goes, “You have a lifetime to make your first record.” But that freedom of time is coupled with increased pressure. So often, debut albums are saddled with the weight of expectation. The members of Austin, Texas-based White Label Analog—vocalist Chris Didear, guitarist/vocalist James Millican, drummer/vocalist Heath Macintosh, keyboardist/vocalist Alison Pepper, and bassist Aaron Herbster—have been through that pressure before, and they know how to rise to the challenge with their electrifying debut album, In Case You Just Tuned In.

Just when you thought there was enough going on in and around your apartment in Austin, a whole new list of musical newbies hits the scene.  From youthful spirits of The Bishops to the cosmic and psychedelic mix that Golden Dawn Arkestra brings to the stage, the options to enjoy the latest and greatest mix of music right here in your own town are almost endless.

To help you enjoy a summer filled with lots of extraordinary new sounds and scenery, we’ve dedicated this month’s blog to showcase (and promote) the best new bands in Austin.  Below you will find snippets from their websites.  For more details, be sure to click on the name of each band that is anchored with a direct link to their site.

The Bishops

The Bishops are an Austin-based trio consisting of vocalist Cara Bishop, producer Troy Bishop, and rapper Luv Bishop. These siblings are bringing a new wavy sound to music, pushing the boundaries of any genre. The Bishops’ unique blend of styles consists of influences from electronic, hip-hop, jazz, RnB and pop music, creating a sound that is bound to bring together a diverse crowd.

 Golden Dawn Arkestra

The Golden Dawn Arkestra are a psychedelic afrobeat band from Austin, TX. Golden Dawn Arkestra hails from a small planet in the constellation Cygnus, light-years away in the outermost reaches of the galaxy. The Arkestra conducts experiments involving space and time travel through the use of sound and movement. Their followers delight in these rituals; all bear witnesses to their higher selves and joyously bask in the eternal light that joins us all as one.

John Wesley Coleman III

Here’s an interesting story that starts like many of the stars that make it or break it to the stage.  Although JWC III doesn’t have an official “bio” per se on his website, it’s worth some time for you to view it here  to see and feel his ride to fame from his home in Austin.

Tele Novella

We present the following overview from “The Temp Agency” listing of this intriguing new talent that has taken the world by storm.  As their story goes …

Tele Novella is sugar-crash dream-psych popsicle punch out of Austin, TX with members of Agent Ribbons and Voxtrot. Influenced by the nocturnal jungles of Os Mutantes and the lapeled, knee-socked smarts of Belle and Sebastian, the songwriting is sincere and evocative. In early 2014, they released the single version of ‘Trouble in Paradise’ on vinyl with American Laundromat Records right on the tail of the Wes Anderson tribute compilation, to which they contributed a contagious version of ‘Stephanie Says’ by the Velvet Underground. Now they’re releasing their first EP ‘Cosmic Dial Tone’ on Los Angeles Psych Pop label Lolipop Records and will be logging a whole lot of tour dates this fall.

To learn about these bands, and many more, flip to the article that we used as our reference by clicking here.  And then get out and get into some of the best new tunes in Austin!

With spring and summer vacations on the horizon, it’s probably a good idea to make some plans ahead of time to ensure your kids have great vacation – right here in Austin!

Here’s a new list of local suggestions from our neighbors at LeMontreaux apartments of favorite places kids like to eat in Austin.

Torchy’s Tacos  There’s a taco for every taste and a menu to please the entire family at this favorite stop for tacos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  And every month, Torch Taco’s owner Michael Rypka creates his “Torchy’s Taco of the Month” for what has to be some of the most unusual blends of beef, chicken, veggies and more.  Ever heard of Chicken and Waffles?  How about putting all of those traditional southern goods on top of a taco! You have to eat to believe it!

The Frisco  With a history that dates back to the 1950’s, The Frisco is living proof that if one mixes great food with great service that one can survive any ebb and tide of the economy, and any competition.  Sixty years later, The Frisco is a testament to its mission and top ratings year after year.  Just one step into this classic Diner environment and you’ll know you have found a great spot to take your kids out on the town this spring, and year-round.,

Gourdough’s Public House  Be it Grandma’s Dumplin’s, the Country Clucker, Three Little Guidos, or Bacon Me Crazy, there is no doubt that a trip to this foodie’s favorite hot spot in Austin is a ‘must-do’ with your kids, and for kids of all ages.  The food is fabulous, the prices fair, and ambiance worth the trip.  Did we mention they are famous for their doughnuts?  Save room for a home-made delight topped with some vanilla ice cream for dessert!

Polvos  Famous for their salsa bar, award-winning Mexican food, and overall great value, Polvos is one of Austin’s favorites for their authentic faire for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Serving their own blend of Cosa Rican coffee, stop in any time of the day for a pick-me-up or to pick up a pound of their exclusive blend.

Napa Flats  This is one of our favorites that fulfills the entire family’s needs for dining out delights.  While the folks enjoy a hearty steak and lovely glass of wine, the kids can have their own good time tossing their pizza dough in preparation for their favorite feast.

Phil’s Ice House.  Their website says it all:  “Burgers, beer, ice cream and a playscape.  It’s like shooting fish in a barrel for busy parents looking for an easy, relaxing, family meal.”

And that’s our short list.  For a long list of other great places to dine with your kids, click to this very informative website at Austin.Earter.com.

Last month we showcased a variety of things to do and see on an adult “Stay-cation” in Austin.  With Spring Break right around the corner, we thought we’d send along some of our favorite things to do with our kids on vacation right here in Austin.

Through a variety of resources and chats with the neighbors within our apartment community in Austin, we’ve created this short list to fill the forthcoming long hours of daytime fun.

Fly Me to the Moon, Sort Of  For an experience you and your kids will never forget, make plans to spend a day at IFly Indoor Skydiving for an adventure of a lifetime.  According to their website, participants “will experience the feeling of a free fall as one floats on a smooth cushion of air.  There’s no parachute, no jumping, and nothing attaching you to planet Earth?”  It’s super fun, super safe and a super cool thing to do this Spring Break.

It’s no secret that Austin is in for one of its busiest weeks of the year as thousands of visitors enter our city to participate in South by Southwest (SXSW) March 10 – 19, 2017.

For those who are not familiar with this annual show, SXSW is a gigantic conference of entrepreneurs that are involved in the film, interactive media, and music festival industry.  It’s been in our neck of the woods since 1987 and has continued to grow to unfathomable levels and into a 10-day affair within itself.

For those who are familiar with this impressive event, you know what the surge in population will be and perhaps how to either participate in the festivities or creatively hide until it’s over.

To help out all our neighbors right here at home at LeMontreaux, we’ve decided to share a great story that was written and recently published in Austin Monthly.

Just one click (right here) to the article and you will find what they have dubbed as a “Survivors Guide” to SXSW.

Within the article, it clearly reminds us that any preparation one can do to be ready for the crowds is a smart move.  It notes: “In addition to supercharging the city with inspiration, the resulting hordes also grind traffic to a halt, turn your neighborhood bar RSVP-only, and make already long barbecue lines impossible.”

We encourage you right now to stop, click, and commence on your plans to continue to enjoy springtime in Austin in-between what has become one fine convention that provides tremendous revenue to the city and trickle-down benefits for businesses large and small.

For a complete schedule of events, visit the SXSW website by clicking here.
