Earlier this month we started our own list of things to do INSIDE in Austin this summer. We enjoyed the research and time invested to find the variety of creative classes and entertainment that continue to keep Austin on the top of the charts as one of the best places to live and work in America. For more ideas to help you, your family, and neighbors in and around LeMontreaux to keep cool during our steamy summer days, read on!
Metal Into Something New to Use
Want to be a blacksmith? Or at least add a new talent to your timeline? Head on over to CreativeSide and take an introduction blacksmithing class, learn how to use a fuel torch to weld rods and sheets of steel into a one of a kind home design or practical tool to use throughout your home. Precautions come with the planning. Wear all-cotton clothing and no polyester; hair must be pulled back; shirttails must be tucked into long pants; wear closed-toe shoes; and no jewelry of any kind. Classes are $135 and up.
Get Down at White Horse
Two-step, swing, and get down to the White House for a night filled with fun and free dance instruction. This East Austin honky-tonk offers a variety of lessons that include Cajun dance with Dancin’ Austin on Tuesdays; swing dance with Four on the Floor on Wednesdays; Texas Two Step with Dancin’ Austin on Fridays; and Texas Two Step with Two Left Foots on Saturday. Known as “a haven for hipsters, cowboys, and everyone between,” the White Horse has a full bar, taco trailer, two pool tables, and a popular shoeshine station to keep your dancing boots polished.
Express Yourself
Here’s another interesting option for getting loose while staying cool. Every Sunday morning, at Eastside Austin Elite Fitness, you can move fearlessly to DJ-spun global music through their program that is called Ecstatic Dance Austin. Each class is $12 or you can buy a dance pass for five visits at the cost of $50. It’s where you can dance to your heart’s content to find and express your inner peace through this judgment free zone where no talking is allowed, no photos taken, no video permitted. Express yourself solo or with others, and politely decline a partner by placing your hands in prayer at your heart.
Hip Hop ‘til you Drop
Every Wednesday, Spider House Ballroom transforms into a hip-hop “incubator” with artists taking turns onstage, rapping lyrics to rhythms by the Beat Connection. The fun kicks off at 9 p.m. with a 10-minute freestyle warm-up—anyone can improvise half a verse. Then a sign-up sheet dictates the performance schedule, one song per person, until 11 p.m. The event continues in a more casual fashion as Austin Mic Exchange members often stay to jam with the Beat Connection’s cadre of producers and DJs, who spin until 1 a.m.
Enjoy Bluegrass Mondays at Radio Coffee & Beer
Every Monday evening head on over to the Radio Coffee & Bar in Austin to enjoy some of best bluegrass in the state, or perhaps all of the USA! Go enjoy world-class string players as they perform on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and bass. The music starts at 8:00 p.m. and weather permitting … the shows take place on the small outdoor stage. Bring a blanket or grab a seat at one of the picnic tables at this relaxing Manchaca Road spot that offers craft beer, kombucha on tap, and Stumptown coffee.
Be Seen at this Popular Scene
In 2006, Ryan and Roy Seiders of Driftwood founded YETI Coolers. Today, the company’s new 8,000-square-foot flagship store on South Congress includes a live music stage and patio bar, making it a prime space for events and gatherings. Check the website for a calendar of upcoming events, like free concerts and screenings of short documentary-style films.
Leave it to Austin to encourage us to find yet another whole month of things to do and see while keeping cool in our hometown. Come August, check back into our blog for another long list of places to go and people to see that make living at LeMontreaux such a great place to call home.
