Earlier this month, we shared our top picks for “Boos and Brews” across Austin. But the spooky festivities don’t end there! Here’s more festive fun for all to enjoy this Halloween season.

House Of Torment

If you’re craving an adrenaline rush, look no further than the House Of Torment. Renowned as the “scariest haunted attraction in Austin,” this haunted house is designed to send chills down your spine. Prepare yourself for hair-raising experiences that will make you jump more than once!

Fatal Fear Haunted House

Fear Haunted House started as a passion project, a “pro-level” home haunt driven by our love for horror and a deep connection to our community. With the help of dedicated volunteers, they transformed Halloween into an unforgettable experience, with one goal in mind: to terrify and thrill their guests while raising funds for local nonprofits and performing arts venues.

Bat City Scaregrounds

If you want to head to a haunted house in south Austin, Bat City Scaregrounds is for you. It has been rated Top 10 most "fun, immersive experiences in Austin" and for all the right reasons. They host three highly detailed haunted houses, live music, Vegas-style performances, seasonal food and so much more!

Scream Hollow

Located just past Bastrop, Texas, Scream Hollow Wicked Halloween Park is a scream-worthy Halloween park where participants can visit five different haunted attractions: a haunted corn maze, Mansion of Terror , Lost Pines Asylum Sinister Circus, and a haunted hayride.

Haunted ATX

Boo at the Zoo

Closing up our list of Halloween haunts, If you’re looking for a kid-friendly scary event in Austin, check out the Austin Zoo’s annual event, Boo At The Zoo. While not a frightfully terrifying haunted house event, it’s a fun, gentle entry for younger children to get into Halloween. Wear your costumes while you take a ride on the haunted train, see the zoo animals at night, and visit the haunted houses!

Ready, set, go!  It’s Mardi Gras season!  Our team at LeMontreaux apartments in Austin is making plans to celebrate Fat Tuesday, so keep reading to see the Best Mardi Gras Party in Town and how to prepare the Best Mardi Gras Food any time of the year!
Think! Cajun flavors, colorful décor, brass bands and beignets!  It’s all-around town and in our kitchen too!

Best Mardi Gras Party in Town!
March 4, 2025
Hotel Vegas

First, get your tickets now for the party of the season at Hotel Vegas in Austin.  All the festivities start at 6:00 pm and go into the wee hours … until 2:00 am! They are toasting to the occasion with hurricanes, beads, and King Cake.  Take a bite and if you “get the baby,” you will win a Hotel Vegas SXSW 2025 Key Tag.

More details re: The Baby in the King Cake
So we thought we’d stop right here to explain this tradition and dove into Better Homes & Gardens to get the story about this tradition.
Here’s a short version:
Mardi Gras (a.k.a., Fat Tuesday) falls each year on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday at the start of Lent. Traditionally, as part of that celebratory carnival, colorful king cakes are served at parties and gatherings. King cakes, either purchased or homemade, also tend to contain one customary ingredient—a tiny plastic king cake baby.
The tradition dates back hundreds of years—and there’s an interesting story behind how the king cake baby made its way into the pastry. The practice of making and serving king cakes actually dates back to the origins of Mardi Gras itself, which was first celebrated in America in 1699. Baking a baby into the cake wasn’t common practice until the 1800s.
So, before you put on your beads or fire up that delicious batch of gumbo, arm yourself with the details about why there may be a small baby in your slice of cake—and what it means if you’re the one who finds it. Hint: It’s good luck!”

Best Mardi Gras Meal Ideas – Any Day of the Year

We love to cook!  So much so that we thought this Blog would be the perfect spot to share some of our favorite Cajun recipes from TasteofHome.com that are ideal for this festive time of the year.  Bring on the beads, dress as colorfully as you want to, and let your own good times roll!

King Cake – Of Course!

Ingredients:
•    2 packages (1/4 ounce each) of active dry yeast
•    1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
•    3/4 cup sugar, divided
•    1/2 cup butter, softened
•    1/2 cup warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
•    2 large egg yolks, room temperature
•    1-1/4 teaspoons salt
•    1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
•    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
•    3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
•    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
•    1 large egg, beaten

Glaze

•    1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
•    2 teaspoons lemon juice
•    2 to 3 tablespoons water
•    Green, purple and yellow sugars

Directions:

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 1/2 cup sugar, butter, milk, egg yolks, salt, lemon zest, nutmeg and 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky).

Turn out onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 16×10-in rectangle. Combine cinnamon and remaining sugar; sprinkle over dough to within 1/2 in. of edges. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet; pinch ends together to form a ring. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Brush with egg.

Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack. For the glaze, combine the confectioners' sugar, lemon juice and enough water to achieve the desired consistency. Spread over cake. Sprinkle with colored sugars.

PS. If you want to hide a token plastic little baby inside, do so by cutting a small slit in the bottom of the baked cake – and be sure to tell your guests.  Have a small prize ready for the winner!

(Super) Easy Jambalaya

Courtesy of TasteofHome.com
Ingredients
•    1 package (8 ounces) jambalaya mix
•    1 package (14 ounces) hot smoked sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices
•    1 cup uncooked shrimp (16-20 per pound), peeled and deveined, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
•    3 green onions, thinly sliced
•    1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
•    1/2 cup pico de gallo

Directions:

Prepare jambalaya mix according to package directions, adding sausage and shrimp during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove from the heat. Stir in cheese, pico de gallo and green onions; heat through.

Delicious Cajun Peach Catfish

Ingredients:

•    2 tablespoons olive oil
•    2 teaspoons lemon juice
•    1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
•    1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
•    1/3 cup finely chopped pecans
•    2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
•    1 tablespoon dry bread crumbs
•    1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
•    4 catfish fillets (6 ounces each)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425°. In a small bowl, combine oil, lemon juice, Cajun seasoning and thyme. In another bowl, combine pecans, cheese, breadcrumbs, parsley and 1 tablespoon of the oil mixture.

To help you enjoy all the fun and festivities, our family at Le Montreaux apartments in Austin is sharing some of their top ideas on where to go and what to do to celebrate Halloween and the fall season in Austin.

Want to know where and how to pick out the perfect pumpkin? Want to try out some new recipes for canning this year? Read on, then check our Blog later this month for ideas on creating the perfect costumes and where to show them off at the top spot to celebrate Halloween in Austin, this year.

How To Pick Out A Perfect Pumpkin

So, where do you start? It depends on the purpose. If you have plans to host a pumpkin carving party, focus on the large, uniform shapes; they are best for carving creative creatures. If you are seeking a pumpkin for the perfect pumpkin pie, here’s the rule: the smaller and heavier, the better.

While picking out pumpkins, be sure to get a few squashes to make one of the richest and most delicious recipes for Squash Soup from HowSweetEats.com.

To ensure your pumpkin lasts as long as it can, exchange the real candles of yesteryear with battery-operated candles.

And here’s an excellent tip to keep your artistry looking healthy well into the fall season: wipe the fruit off with bleach and water.

Where to Pick Out A Pumpkin

Last year we provided you with a list of pumpkin patches and local farms within a short drive from our apartments to rent in Austin, Texas. All of those listed below are still our favorite spots.

PEAS Community Farm and Urban Orchard

Boggy Creek Farm

Sweet Eats Adventure Farm

Delicious Fall Canning Recipes

It’s that season again! If you have yet to try canning, perhaps this year is the year to do so. There are so many good reasons to add this hobby to your list:

  1. Preserving the nutritional value of fresh produce: Canning retains most of a food’s nutrients.
  2. Cost savings: Canning food is cheaper than freezing food.
  3. Environmental impact: Canning helps save the environment.
  4. Convenience: Canned foods are readily available.
  5. Versatility: Canning allows you to enjoy homemade goodness throughout the year.
  6. Preservation of family recipes: Canning helps preserve traditional flavors.
  7. Complete control of the ingredients. You won’t have to have a dictionary to understand what’s in your creation!

Here are a few of our favorites from TasteofHome.com. We hope you enjoy them too.

With Father’s Day around the corner on June 16, 2024, we are offering a list of things to do with your dad to capture the fun and memories to come.

Whether you and your Dad choose to make a family video, share your favorite tunes, plan a night on the town, or hang out by the Q by the pool, our family at LeMontreaux Apartments for rent in Austin sends the best to all the fathers in our community.

Take A Selfie or Family Video

First, capture your moments together and stage some selfies that will make you smile for years to come. If you cannot be together, find some of your favorite photos together and send them to Dad (the sooner, the better)!

For those who are a little more techie, make a video that you can play years from now. To make this fun and easy, click into Vimeo’s Free Video Creator to capture those memories that make being with Dad so extra special.

Make Dad A Play List

There are so many talented musicians who have written songs about their dads. The best ones are those that tell memorable stories or have a little humor to keep him smiling through your celebration and beyond. As you prepare to embark on this perfect gift for Father’s Day, we will give you a head start by recommending our following favorites:

  • My Father’s Eye, by Eric Clapton
  • Wind Beneath My Wings, by Gerald and Eddie Levert
  • Build Me a Daddy, by Luke Brown
  • First Man, by Camila Cabello
  • I Learned From You, by Miley Cyrus
  • He Didn’t Have to Be, by Brad Paisley
  • Color Him Father, by The Winstons
  • He Walked on Water, Randy Travis

Capture Your Family History

Father’s Day is the perfect day to slow down, unplug, and plug into your dad’s stories about his father and those before him. Just as important, or more, if you are fortunate enough to have a father or grandfather who served our country, now is the time to ask those delicate questions that will paint the picture of one or more of your favorite heroes:  Try these:

How did you come to serve in the military? ‘

What is your proudest moment?

During your service, can you recall times when you were afraid?

What are your strongest memories from your time in the military?

What lessons did you learn from this time in your life?

Go To a Concert in Austin

As the music capital of the world, there is no lack of entertainment this month and throughout the year. Some of the city’s best concerts are on tap in June and July, so get your tickets now.

The Drop-in Summer Series: Inspired by Austin’s love of outdoor jams, this free outdoor concert series is every Thursday, August 15. As their website notes: They provide the tunes, the drinks, and the view, you bring the energy, and we will bring the vibe all summer long on the Hartman Concert Lawn.

Tickets for The Drop-In are FREE. Long Center Members will receive early access to RSVP every Friday before the public, who can RSVP every Monday. It goes without saying, though…, that drop-ins are welcome, too!

Candlelight: For a more classical night on the town, Southwestern University offers the “Candlelight Concerts” with a night of Vivaldi’s classics.

Program:

Our last blog gave you our insight into the best places to pick a pumpkin in Austin.  And today, here are some new ideas that were hand-picked by our staff at Le Montreaux apartments in Austin, who love this season as much as you do!

Take a Haunted Tour of Austin
If you have never done this, put it on your calendar now.  The folks at ATX offer the only haunted tour in Austin and the only tour you may ever take … in a private hearse!  Really! For those who have lived in and around the city for many years, you know that paranormal activity prevails year-round, and especially during the Halloween season.  You need to make a reservation, and these tours sell out, so don’t wait.
During the excursion you will be escorted by their professional guides (fully dressed in creepy costume) to some of the area’s most haunted homes and establishments, including the Littlefield House, Clay Pit, the Tavern, and others.

Murder, Mystery and Misadventure!
Make your reservation today for this must-do Halloween haunt on October 29.  Dress comfy and deck out if you want to for a creepy crawly tour through one of Austin’s most haunted cemeteries.  The tour starts at 10:00 am and leaves on the half-hour until 2:30 pm.  You will be introduced to some of its ‘finest residents’, which include a victim of a saloon shooting, a mourning mother who had to bury her kids, two ambushes (keep your eyes open!) and other colorful characters that make this tour one not to miss!

Austin Ghost Tours
Presented by the couple that wrote “History and Hauntings in Austin” and other spooky stories, these tours are true to their tales.  The team at Austin Ghost Tours has been personally involved in investigating Austin’s famous haunted history for over a quarter century.  Based on “firsthand experiences,” the (published) tour guides will take you into a world of paranormal activity like you have never experienced before.
As their website notes:  Reserve your spot and bring an open mind as guests have captured photographic evidence or reported interactions, whispers, and COLD SPOTS!

Take the Kids to Boo at the Zoo!
On Friday and Saturday nights, kids of all ages can take a spooky train ride, be entertained by goofy puppets and hang around in the haunted mansion, too. Wear your costumes (no masks, please) and stroll through the illuminated trails and décor. Bring flashlights to see all the critters at night at our famously friendly Austin Zoo.

Many of our holidays have traditional characters or icons are symbolic of our celebrations throughout the year.  From Cupid at Valentine’s Day, four-leaf clover during St. Patrick’s Day, pumpkins in October, and St. Nick, these colorful elements have become iconic to some of the most celebrated holidays around the world.

So what’s up with a bunny and a basket that are so iconic to Easter which is just around the corner?

There are almost endless references throughout the world wide web that tell the tale of the furry friend that brings joy to all during this time of the year.

We selected some insight from an article in TIME magazine that seemed to provide a succinct story that we will share with you now.

They note that the connection of the bunny to Easter started back in time and evolved during pagan celebrations that occurred during the beginning of spring.  During this time of the year, throughout the world, spring is symbolic of ‘renewal of life.’  Mirroring this vision was, and continues to be, the observation of Christ’s resurrection that also occurs during the vernal equinox. Included in many of the stories that we researched was another connection of Eostre, ‘The Goddess of Dawn and Fertility.”

It is also noted that the credit for tying these concepts and occurrences together goes to Missionaries who were said to merge the pagan traditions with Christian holidays.  Apparently this made the celebrations of Eostre and the resurrection an easier story to tell … and be accepted worldwide.

Fast forwarding the whole concept of the Easter Bunny, postings note that it was the German’s who brought the bunny into the picture.  The historic rabbit, named “Oschter Haws’ or ‘Easter Hare, gets the credit.

As the story is told, Oschter Haws laid a nest of colorful eggs that were then presented to well-behaved children.  Much like Christmas Eve when children leave cookies and milk for Santa, back in the early 1660s, children would leave carrots in bunny nests.  Today,  Easter Baskets are reminiscent of days gone by when children would make nests for Oschter’s eggs.  Throughout time, the “eggs” have transformed into more than something for a meal for all.  Chocolate bunnies, candies, and little gifts now fill children’s baskets on this day of celebration of the resurrection of Christ.
So there you have it!  Watch for our next blog for delicious recipes to prepare for your
