At LeMontreaux apartments for rent or lease in Austin, Texas, we believe that Thanksgiving is an opportunity to gather, share memories and enjoy the traditions that all our families have created over the generations.
As it’s that time of the year, we have chosen to share some of our ideas on how to plan the perfect Thanksgiving and, later this month, where to go to enjoy Thanksgiving in Austin.
Top Ideas to Plan for the Perfect Thanksgiving
Make the gathering your own
Start by deciding what feels comfortable for the people who will attend. Some enjoy a large dinner; others prefer a small meal, a potluck, or a relaxed afternoon with friends. If travel, cost, health, or family circumstances make a traditional gathering difficult, consider a video call, a shared meal on another day, or a low-key celebration at home.
Don’t forget to ask about dietary needs, accessibility, arrival times, and whether anyone would like to bring a dish. Sharing the work can make hosting easier and help everyone feel included. A potluck can also highlight the different foods and family traditions guests bring to the table.
Prepare and share a meal
For many people, food is at the heart of Thanksgiving. A menu might include roasted turkey, vegetables, stuffing, potatoes, bread, or pie, but it can just as easily center on vegetarian dishes, regional foods, family recipes, or guests’ favorite meals. In fact, I remember one year when we asked the neighbors’ kids at LeMontreaux what they wanted: we ended up with Pizza!
There’s no need to serve every classic dish. Choose a menu that suits your budget, kitchen, and guests.
Make room for gratitude and reflection
Thanksgiving traditions often include expressing gratitude. Keep it natural and optional: invite guests to share one thing they appreciate, write a note of thanks, or simply take a quiet moment before the meal. Some people may find the holiday complicated or difficult, so avoid putting anyone on the spot. Listening and making space for different feelings can be just as meaningful as a formal tradition.
You might also use the day to remember loved ones who are absent. A favorite recipe, photograph, story, or toast can honor their place in the family or community. Let guests participate in ways that feel right to them.
Spend time together beyond the table
A celebration doesn’t have to revolve entirely around dinner. Depending on the weather, you might even consider a pool party while you prep that turkey on the BBQ! And you don’t have to plan it all by yourself.
After your feast is over, outdoor activities can be a pleasant way to stretch and connect, while quieter options give people room to rest. If guests have different energy levels or needs, offer a mix of activities rather than expecting everyone to join the same one.
For a community gathering, consider a shared meal, a recipe exchange, or organize a collection of nonperishable food for a local food pantry. Check the organization’s current needs and donation instructions before collecting items.
Celebrate thoughtfully
Thanksgiving is often presented as a simple story of shared harmony, but its history is more complex, particularly for Indigenous peoples. A thoughtful celebration can acknowledge that complexity and make room for learning about Indigenous histories, communities, and perspectives.
Above all, let the day reflect care rather than perfection. A warm welcome, a meal shared without pressure, and time spent appreciating one another can become traditions of their own. Whether your Thanksgiving is lively or quiet, familiar or newly created, the most meaningful customs are the ones that help people feel respected, connected, and at ease.

Earlier this month we showcased events in Austin in October. As there are so many things to do and see in the fall season, our staff at LeMontreaux apartments to rent or lease in Austin continues the list for you!
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix | October 23–25, 2026
The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix returns to Circuit of The Americas October 23–25. Race weekend combines world-class Formula 1 competition with concerts, fan activities and the energetic atmosphere that has made the Austin Grand Prix one of the city's signature events.
Viva La Vida Festival & Día de los Muertos | October 24
Austin's rich Mexican-American heritage takes center stage at the Viva La Vida Festival on October 24. Presented by the Mexic-Arte Museum, the celebration is Austin's longest-running Día de los Muertos festival and features a colorful grand procession, traditional foods, music, performances, art activities, local vendors and a lowrider exhibition.
If you prefer your Halloween with a serious scare, House of Torment is one of Austin's best-known haunted attractions, and our staff’s as well! Elaborate sets, costumed scare actors and multiple haunted experiences make it a favorite for older teens and adults. October weekends can sell out, so advance tickets are recommended.
Another Central Texas option is SCARE for a CURE in Manor, a nonprofit haunted attraction where proceeds support local charities. It offers an immersive, story-driven approach to Halloween rather than simply relying on spooky stuff to scare the kids.
Freaky Deaky | October 30–31, 2026
Halloween weekend gets a major dose of electronic music at Freaky Deaky Festival, October 30–31 at the Travis County Exposition Center. The two-day festival features multiple stages devoted to house, techno, trance and EDM, making it a popular Halloween destination for the 18-and-over crowd.
Austin Film Festival | October 29–November 5, 2026
Movie lovers can wrap up the month at the Austin Film Festival, beginning October 29. Screenings, panels, conversations and filmmaker events take place at venues throughout downtown Austin. It is particularly popular with aspiring writers and filmmakers because of its strong emphasis on screenwriting and storytelling.
Make October an Austin Adventure
With live music, racing, art, pumpkins, haunted attractions and one of the country's most colorful Día de los Muertos celebrations, October may be Austin's most action-packed month of the year. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly fall weekend, a music-filled getaway or a Halloween adventure, there's something happening almost every weekend – just a short drive from our apartments for lease or rent in Austin!

Austin's biggest October tradition returns to Zilker Park for two weekends of music. The festival offers more than 140 artists performing across eight stages, making it one of the country's premier music festivals. Even if you don't have a festival ticket, many Austin venues host official and unofficial concerts throughout the city during ACL weekends.
Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms | Through October 31, 2026
For a magical nighttime fall experience, check out Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms. Thousands of carved pumpkins are transformed into elaborate art installations along an illuminated walking trail. The family-friendly attraction runs through Halloween and is especially impressive after dark.
Austin's Pumpkin Patches and Fall Festivals
There are plenty of places around Austin to pick a pumpkin and enjoy traditional fall activities.
Sweet Eats Fruit Farm in Georgetown hosts its Fall Festival through November 8, with a corn maze, petting zoo, apple slingshots and obstacle courses.
Indian Springs Ranch Fall Fest in South Austin runs through November 1 and combines a pumpkin patch with unusual attractions including camels, zebras and buffalo.
Uhland Fall Fest, south of Austin near Kyle, runs weekends through November 1 with rides, games, food and a pumpkin patch.

Boo at the Zoo | October 2–24, 2026
Families can celebrate Halloween at the Austin Zoo's Boo at the Zoo on weekends throughout October. Children can trick-or-treat along the zoo's pathways, see themed decorations and enjoy a Halloween experience designed especially for younger visitors.

Lone Star Le Mans — September 4–6

The three-day event combines high-speed endurance racing with concerts, fan activities and the excitement of watching some of the world’s top sports cars compete on COTA’s challenging 3.4-mile circuit.
One of Austin’s most unusual traditions returns September 5. Austin Bat Fest celebrates the city’s famous Congress Avenue Bridge bats with live music, food, vendors and family activities. As evening approaches, watch an estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath the bridge—a spectacular sight and one of Austin’s most memorable experiences.
Music lovers won't want to miss LEVITATION, taking over venues throughout the Red River District and East Austin from September 10–13. The eclectic festival features psychedelic rock, punk, metal, indie, electronic music and more, with performances spread across multiple venues. ]]>We asked our families at Le Montreaux apartments to lease or rent in Austin for their personal advice; and here’s what they said:
This rescue-focused zoo is perfect for shorter attention spans: shady paths, close-up looks at big cats, primates, and a miniature train ride. Bring a small bag of quarters for feed stations and plan a “who spots it first?” animal bingo to keep kids engaged.
- Hands-on play at Thinkery
Austin’s children’s museum turns curiosity into hidden education moments with water labs, light-and-sound tinkering, and maker spaces. Rotate through exhibits, then reset with a snack outside. Timed tickets help avoid crowds, and the gift shop stocks great STEM kits for at-home follow-ups. - Cool off at Barton Springs Pool
Here’s the perfect spot for an ‘End of the Summer” get-together with kids and friends in tow. The spring-fed water hovers around 68–70°F which is an instant summer reset. To throw in a little education, stop by “Splash!” education center to learn how the aquifer works. - Explore Zilker Park and Zilker Playground
Whenever we seem to be blogging about how to keep kids having fun and being educated along the way, Zilker Park always pops up. For all the right reasons. Did you know there are over 20 different things to explore within this expansive park in Austin? For a full list, visit their impressive website and make the final days of summer seem endless all in one day!
- Paddle Lady Bird Lake
Got teens to entertain? We always recommend time on the many lakes that keep Austin (somewhat) cool in the summertime. At Lady Bird Lake, we like to rent kayaks, canoes, or SUPs. Go in the morning for glassy water and fewer boaters. Life jackets are provided; please use them to keep everyone safe. - Discover the Bullock Texas State History Museum
Here’s one that does not always pop up on everyone’s list of things to do in Austin – yet should. At Bullock Texas State History Museum there are hands-on galleries, an IMAX, and rotating exhibits that make Texas history feel alive. Reward your kids and donate to this non-profit by visiting the museum where you will find an impressive collection of Texas-themed books and puzzles. - Make a splash at McKinney Falls State Park
If you have yet to hike to the falls, now is the time to cool off and click into some ‘end of the summer’ IG posts with you and yours in front of the waterfalls. If this is a bit too adventurous, don’t ever forget that right here at Le Montreaux apartments in Austin, the swimming pool is a super watering hole to celebrate the end of summer.
Between its water parks, educational experiences, and outdoor beauty, Austin’s end-of-the-summer adventures are made for kids to cool off, explore, laugh, and learn.
