Thanksgiving Traditions, Events in Austin, Texas (Part One)

  |     |   Family, Holiday, Traditions

At LeMontreaux apartments for rent or lease in Austin, Texas, we believe that Thanksgiving is an opportunity to gather, share memories and enjoy the traditions that all our families have created over the generations.

As it’s that time of the year, we have chosen to share some of our ideas on how to plan the perfect Thanksgiving and, later this month, where to go to enjoy Thanksgiving in Austin.

Top Ideas to Plan for the Perfect Thanksgiving

Make the gathering your own

Start by deciding what feels comfortable for the people who will attend. Some enjoy a large dinner; others prefer a small meal, a potluck, or a relaxed afternoon with friends. If travel, cost, health, or family circumstances make a traditional gathering difficult, consider a video call, a shared meal on another day, or a low-key celebration at home.

Don’t forget to ask about dietary needs, accessibility, arrival times, and whether anyone would like to bring a dish. Sharing the work can make hosting easier and help everyone feel included. A potluck can also highlight the different foods and family traditions guests bring to the table.

Prepare and share a meal

For many people, food is at the heart of Thanksgiving. A menu might include roasted turkey, vegetables, stuffing, potatoes, bread, or pie, but it can just as easily center on vegetarian dishes, regional foods, family recipes, or guests’ favorite meals. In fact, I remember one year when we asked the neighbors’ kids at LeMontreaux what they wanted: we ended up with Pizza!

There’s no need to serve every classic dish. Choose a menu that suits your budget, kitchen, and guests.

Make room for gratitude and reflection

Thanksgiving traditions often include expressing gratitude. Keep it natural and optional: invite guests to share one thing they appreciate, write a note of thanks, or simply take a quiet moment before the meal. Some people may find the holiday complicated or difficult, so avoid putting anyone on the spot. Listening and making space for different feelings can be just as meaningful as a formal tradition.

You might also use the day to remember loved ones who are absent. A favorite recipe, photograph, story, or toast can honor their place in the family or community. Let guests participate in ways that feel right to them.

Spend time together beyond the table

A celebration doesn’t have to revolve entirely around dinner.  Depending on the weather, you might even consider a pool party while you prep that turkey on the BBQ! And you don’t have to plan it all by yourself.

After your feast is over, outdoor activities can be a pleasant way to stretch and connect, while quieter options give people room to rest. If guests have different energy levels or needs, offer a mix of activities rather than expecting everyone to join the same one.

For a community gathering, consider a shared meal, a recipe exchange, or organize a collection of nonperishable food for a local food pantry. Check the organization’s current needs and donation instructions before collecting items.

Celebrate thoughtfully

Thanksgiving is often presented as a simple story of shared harmony, but its history is more complex, particularly for Indigenous peoples. A thoughtful celebration can acknowledge that complexity and make room for learning about Indigenous histories, communities, and perspectives.

Above all, let the day reflect care rather than perfection. A warm welcome, a meal shared without pressure, and time spent appreciating one another can become traditions of their own. Whether your Thanksgiving is lively or quiet, familiar or newly created, the most meaningful customs are the ones that help people feel respected, connected, and at ease.
